Natural Deodorant: A Cheat Sheet

Deodorants. It’s one of those products that you use every day without giving it much thought. But you’re applying synthetic and potentially toxic ingredients to the sensitive skin on your underarms, so you really do need to stop and think about what’s in the products you’re using.

No one wants to smell bad. But smelling good doesn’t mean that you need to use ingredients that have been linked to developing Alzheimer’s, cancer, hormone disruption, or skin irritants and allergens.

When you start to research what’s in mainstream deodorants, the first ingredient that jumps out is usually aluminium. Aluminium compounds are commonly used in mainstream deodorants because they stop you sweating.

But then there are other ingredients that are often used: the perfumes and fragrances that mask BO and make you smell nice; the triclosan that’s supposed to kill bacteria; the formaldehyde releasing preservatives; and the propellants that get the spray out of the can and onto your skin. Every time you apply deodorant, you’re putting all of these on to your skin.

So how do you wade through the greenwash and misinformation to find out which are the best natural deodorants? Not the ones that say, ‘all natural’ and then turn out to be made with aluminum compounds, but the ones which are truly nontoxic?
