Dirty Dozen vs Clean Fifteen

The “Clean Fifteen” is a complementary list to the “Dirty Dozen” and represents fruits and vegetables that tend to have lower levels of pesticide residues when conventionally grown. It provides a guide for consumers who want to make informed choices about their produce. Some examples that often appear on the Clean Fifteen list include avocados, sweet corn, pineapples, onions, and papayas. These items are considered to have lower pesticide contamination, making them safer options when organically grown versions are not available or affordable. However, it’s important to note that pesticide residues can still be present on conventionally grown produce, albeit at lower levels. Regardless of whether produce is on the Dirty Dozen or Clean Fifteen lists, washing and proper food preparation are recommended to minimize potential pesticide exposure and always shop organic if you are able!
